There is a new announcement that the Covid-19 Relief Bill and Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021 extends expiring tax provisions.  Among the provisions included in the more than 5000 page bill, is the extension of the Universal Charitable Deduction (UCD) through 2021.  Extended through 2021 will be the $300.00 UCD for non-itemizers–$600.00 for joint filers and the previous increase of the itemized charitable deductions from 60 to 100 percent for individuals and 25 percent of taxable income for corporations. (This is good news!)

The March 27, 2020 Cares Act, has provisions for Charitable Giving that gives incentives for Donors to 501 (c) 3 Non-Profit Organizations. Section 2204 includes a new above-the-line deduction (universal or non-itemized deduction that applies to all taxpayers) for total charitable contributions is up to $300.00. The incentive applies to contributions made in 2020 and would be claimed on tax forms next year. Section 2205 lifts the existing cap on annual contributions for those who itemize, raising it from 60 percent of adjusted gross income to 100 percent. For corporations, the legislation raises the annual limit from 10 percent to 25 percent.
